Special education – things to keep in mind

Educating children with special needs is way more complicated than educating children otherwise. Quite a lot of parents take charge of their own kids, as they feel they are the best people who can understand and handle their child’s needs. But many parents opt to enroll the kids in schools for children with special needs. And if you are a teacher in such a school, or intend to become one, here are a few things you need to keep in mind:

  1. It’s going to be nerve-wracking:
There will be times when you feel like giving up and question why you took up this task – but hold on. No matter how talented you are, no matter how ready you feel about tackling every day that comes your way, you will still end up stressed out every day. And this is because you are teaching kids with special needs. So, of course, you need to have special patience and energy levels to teach these students. And don’t worry, every teacher goes through the same thing – in the end, the smiling faces and antics of the little ones will make your day worth it!
  2. You’ll be playing multiple roles:
You need to know that you won’t be playing the role of just a teacher – you’re going to be a counselor, too. More than the kids themselves, it’s the parents who require counseling. So you have to be ready to switch roles as per the need of the situation – and act as a guide to parents who too, struggle at understanding their kids and their needs at times.
  3. Individual attention:
There’s a reason why the teacher-student ratio in special schools is strong. As a teacher, you will be assigned a batch of few students so that you can devote your attention to each of them. But this doesn’t make your task easy. And you cannot apply the same study plan and tactics to the entire group. Each child with special needs is different – so you have to be prepared with an individual plan to ensure each of them learns in the way they can do easily.

Being a teacher to a class of kids with special needs, you need to understand that every child will be different and you cannot treat everyone the same. At the same time, you need to be ready to deal with the ways these children react to specific triggers too – keep calm and be patient enough.
